A Brief Introduction to UPC Codes

It is the non-profit organization GS1 that determines how UPCs work around the world. To determine if your UPC matches one of these codes, Amazon checks a database of all 12-digit codes in production.

You should check your Amazon UPC codes with GS1 to ensure it’s correct, as they are the only ones eligible to produce them. As long as other organizations are GS1 members, it does not mean they cannot offer UPCs, just because GS1 is the world leader.

UPCs look like a jumble of numbers, but they contain meaningful sequences that are associated with a specific company and product.

The first thing that you must do before purchasing a large number of UPCs is to gather all the information you will need.

  • Calculate the number of UPCs you will need. If you buy in bulk, you will have a better chance of getting a lower price. Be sure to figure out how many you will need in advance. Bundles must also have their own UPCs, as well as each individual product. You must determine how many separate and bundled items you will be selling.
  • Decide which pricing plan you would like. If you buy in bulk, your prices should be lower, but pricing plans go above and beyond that. The cost is $30 per year and renewal is not necessary for small businesses with a few products. In cases where a business requires more than nine UPCs, it should instead use the traditional GS1 Company Prefix model, which can help businesses manage their product line and scale. Fees for the first year are $250, followed by a $50 renewal fee every year. The prices triple (750 for the initial fee and $150 for the annual renewal fee) if you go up to the next tier of 1 to 100 UPCs.   • UPCs must be chosen carefully: It is possible that your UPC requirements are different depending on whether you sell online and offline. For example, the same GTIN will be used for brick-and-mortar stores as well as Amazon stores.
